Accountant in Mexico for foreigners and cross-border businesses
Short answer: Contablez.mx is a bilingual accounting firm based in Tijuana with over ten years in operation and a team with more than twenty years of Mexican tax, accounting and payroll experience. We handle your SAT registration, monthly filings, invoicing (CFDI), payroll with IMSS, and we explain every number in plain English. Fully online for clients anywhere in Mexico or abroad; in-person by appointment in Tijuana. Monday to Saturday, 9:00–18:00 Pacific.
Who is this for?
- Americans and Canadians living in Baja who earn income in Mexico: rentals, Airbnb, consulting, remote work billed to Mexican clients.
- US companies operating in Tijuana (maquila, logistics, call centers, warehouses) that need a local accountant who reports in English and understands the border.
- Foreigners opening a business in Mexico: choosing between operating as an individual (persona física) or forming a company (S.A. de C.V. or S. de R.L.), getting an RFC, and staying compliant from day one.
- Mexican-Americans with family businesses on both sides of the border who want one firm that speaks both languages and both tax systems’ vocabulary.
What do we actually do for you?
- SAT registration (RFC) and tax regime selection. RESICO, business activity, or a Mexican company: we pick the one that fits your income and expenses, not the one that’s easiest for the accountant.
- Monthly filings. Income tax (ISR), VAT (IVA), withholdings and the DIOT, filed on time every month, with a plain-English summary of what you paid and why.
- Electronic invoicing (CFDI 4.0). We set you up on the online invoicing and payroll system we use with our clients so you can issue invoices yourself, 24/7, without waiting for anyone.
- Payroll and social security. IMSS and Infonavit registrations, pay slips, terminations and severance calculated correctly, so an employee dispute never becomes a lawsuit.
- SAT monitoring. We review what SAT already knows about you through its four data viewers and fix mismatches before they become a letter.
- Company formation. Any type of Mexican legal entity, with the tax structure designed up front and a notary in the loop.
- Border-zone VAT. The 8% VAT incentive for the northern border region applies to some sales and not others. Getting it wrong is one of the most common audits we see.
Northern border region VAT incentive: 8% instead of 16%, in force through December 31, 2026 per the applicable federal decree. Subject to verification against the Diario Oficial de la Federación.
How does working with a Mexican accountant differ from the US?
Three things surprise most of our foreign clients. First, everything is electronic and monthly: invoices are validated by the government in real time (CFDI), and most taxes are paid every month, not once a year. Second, the tax authority already has your data: SAT sees every invoice you issue or receive and every bank deposit above certain thresholds, so «we’ll sort it out at year end» doesn’t exist here. Third, your accountant’s password to SAT is powerful: choose someone who explains what they do and never asks for your credentials by text message.
If you also file in the US, we don’t prepare your IRS return, but we give you clean, documented Mexican figures your US CPA can use, and we coordinate with them when needed.
What does it cost?
Monthly accounting is quoted per case, based on your regime, invoice volume and headcount; you’ll have a quote within one business day. Our SAT data-viewer review has a fixed price: MXN $1,149 for individuals and MXN $3,500 for companies, one time. The first 15-minute call is free and has no strings attached.
Common questions
Do I need to be in Tijuana? No. Documents travel by WhatsApp and email, meetings are video calls, and filings are electronic. If you are in Tijuana and prefer to meet in person, we schedule an appointment.
Can you help if I’m behind with SAT? Yes. We start with a diagnosis of what SAT has on file, then a catch-up plan; you’ll know the cost before we start.
Do you speak English? Yes. The owner is bilingual and handles English-speaking clients directly.
What do I need to get started? Your RFC and SAT password (CIEC) if you already have them, or your immigration document and proof of address if you don’t. We guide you through the rest.
Tell us your situation. We’ll tell you what you need, what you don’t, and what it costs.
